Channel planning

Google Ads or SEO: Where Should a Small Business Start?

Compare paid search and SEO by business readiness, measurement, and goals before choosing your first marketing channel.

By Quantum Digital Lab · Planning resource

The first question is not which channel is better. It is whether your offer, website, and follow-up process are ready for the people you want to reach. Use this decision guide to prepare a focused conversation.

Check the foundations first

  • Can visitors understand your offer and contact you easily on mobile?
  • Does the page match the service you want to promote?
  • Can you distinguish genuine enquiries from spam or unrelated requests?
  • Who responds to enquiries, and how quickly can they do so?
  • Do you know which customers and locations you can serve?

Consider paid search for a focused campaign

Paid search may suit a specific offer with a relevant landing page, clear targeting, and a clearly defined test scope. Define the campaign boundaries, conversion tracking, and review process before launch.

Clicks do not guarantee customers. Agree how you will review search terms, enquiries, and lead quality before expanding the campaign.

Consider SEO when you can invest in the website over time

SEO work may be a better starting point when your site needs clearer service pages, better technical foundations, and useful answers to customer questions. It requires ongoing work and does not buy a particular search position.

Prioritize content tied to what you actually sell. A useful service page and a practical buying guide can be more relevant to your business than a large collection of unrelated articles.

When a combined approach makes sense

If your team capacity allows it, a focused paid campaign can run alongside improvements to your organic service pages. Evaluate each channel separately, because their costs and reporting are different.

For example, a local business might test one enquiry-focused campaign while improving a page explaining its core service. This is a planning example, not a Quantum client case study.

Questions to bring to a planning call

  • What is the first offer we should promote?
  • What must be fixed on the website before promotion?
  • What can our team sustain without depending on immediate sales?
  • Which outcomes can we measure reliably?
  • What would make us continue, revise, or stop the initial plan?
